Chapel Hill, N.C. -- University of North Carolina head coach Elmar Bolowich released on Thursday the 2001 signing class for the Tar Heel men's soccer program. The class includes nine student-athletes (eight freshmen and a junior transfer) - three forwards, three midfielders, two defenders and a goalkeeper. Five of the signees attended North Carolina high schools.
"This is a wonderful recruiting class that should add a lot of talent to our squad for next year if everyone adjusts to college life well," Bolowich said on Thursday. "Our coaching staff is very pleased. We had to replace a lot of talent from last year's squad and this recruiting class will help us do that. The class features high-level players with extensive experience."
Faced with the loss of its top three scorers from last season -- junior Chris Carrieri to early entry in the MLS draft and seniors Caleb Norkus and Michael Bucy to graduation -- Bolowich signed three forwards for the 2001 campaign in junior transfer David Testo and freshmen Jonathan Davis and Marcus Storey. Bolowich hopes midfielder Tim Merritt can fill the attacking midfielder role vacated by Bucy.
"It's hard to replace goal-scorers or attacking players," Bolowich said. "I think we did a wonderful job of doing that in bringing in very dynamic players like Jonathan Davis, Marcus Storey and Tim Merritt. David Testo started for two years at South Carolina and is a North Carolina native, so we're excited about having him as well. Ray Fumo was the North Carolina player of the year, which says a lot for his ability.
"We're lucky in that we return all of our starters on defense and in the goal this fall. We added some great prospects for the future who also could contribute on defense this season," Bolowich continued.
