Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team has moved up a spot to No. 6 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, released late Monday by the IWLCA. The Tar Heels are ranked sixth this week after defeating Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Penn State last week.
UNC was ranked No. 7 last week and has been steadily moving up in the poll since losing three of four games early last month. During a difficult stretch of five consecutive games played away from Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels defeated Johns Hopkins and Loyola but lost to No. 1 Maryland, No. 7 Boston University and No. 4 Duke.
UNC was ranked No. 5 in the preseason and climbed to No. 4 for a week in early March before falling to No. 8 for back-to-back weeks in mid-March.
Loyola, whom UNC defeated 12-10 on March 9 in Baltimore, is ranked No. 2 this week. Penn State, whom Carolina defeated 19-9 on Sunday in State College, Pa., dropped a spot to No. 14 this week. Other ranked teams defeated by the Tar Heels this season include Virginia (No. 9 this week) and Johns Hopkins (No. 18 this week).
Carolina returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field against No. 5 Georgetown. The Hoyas have won two in a row over the Tar Heels, in Washington D.C. in the 1999 NCAA Tournament and the 2000 regular season. UNC defeated Georgetown, 10-6, in overtime in the 1999 regular season. Overall, the series between the two schools is tied 3-3.
Tar Heel head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy was an assistant at Georgetown in 1993-94 before taking over the Tar Heel program from scratch prior to the 1996 season.
