UNC Tops Maryland, 16-9, To Avoid Sweep

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- North Carolina defeated Maryland, 16-9, Sunday afternoon in a college baseball game at Shipley Field. The loss snapped the Terps' four-game winning streak but Maryland did manage to win the series, two games to one. The series win at home over the Tar Heels was the first for the Terrapins since 1986.
The Tar Heels quickly jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back. SS Chad Prosser doubled three times and was 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs while starting pitcher Ralph Roberts tossed seven strong innings, yielding just three runs on four hits. Roberts also enjoyed a fine day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and four runs driven in.
For Prosser, it was his second five-hit game this week. The sophomore shortstop also had five hits in the first game of Monday's doubleheader at NC State (April 2). Prosser finished the Maryland series 11-for-14 and was an amazing 19-for-26 (.731) with nine RBIs and eight runs scored in six games this week, upping his batting average 87 percentage points to a team-high .397.
The Terrapins managed to score eight runs over the final three innings after only scoring once through six innings. Oursler finished 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI. His solo homerun in the seventh was his third home run of the series against the Tar Heels. Senior 1B Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) also had another stellar day with the stick by going 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and three runs driven in.
Adam Greenberg (2-for-5, 4 runs), Russ Adams (3-for-6, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Jeremy Cleveland (2-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Chris Maples (2-for-5, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) also had big days at the plate. Maples had two solo homers.
The victory improves the Tar Heels to 20-16 overall and 3-9 in the ACC. Maryland falls to 10-19 on the year and 2-9 in the ACC.
Carolina concludes a nine-game road stretch Tuesday at UNC Greensboro before hosting Charlotte on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
