CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Andrew Metzler has transferred to the University of North Carolina and will play men's tennis for the Tar Heels beginning the fall, UNC head coach Sam Paul announced Tuesday.
Metzler is transferring to UNC after the University of Kansas dropped its men's tennis team at the conclusion of the 2000-01 school year.
A Missouri native, Metzler played #6 singles and #3 doubles for the Jayhawks as a freshman. He had a 20-17 overall record in singles, including a 12-12 record in dual matches and a 5-3 record in Big 12 Conference matches. At #3 doubles he was 17-18 overall, 12-12 in dual play and 6-2 in conference matches. Metzler was the Big 12 Conference runnerup this past year at both the #6 singles and #3 doubles flights. He also advanced to the round of 16 at the 2000 ITA Region V Singles Championship, winning five straight matches along the way. In reaching the 20-win plateau as a freshman, he recorded eight wins in the fall 2000 season.
"We are happy that Andrew will be joining us in the fall," Paul says. "Although we lost David Cheatwood (#3 singles) and Chad Riley (#6 singles) to graduation we are bringing in three freshmen and Andrew and there will be spirited competition for lineup spots this fall. That bodes well for our team."
As a freshman Metzler was ranked as high as #19 in Region V in singles and as high as #11 in Region V in doubles. His best play came in the fall when he won four successive matches in the Region V qualifying tournament which earned him a spot in the regional's championship flight for individual singles play.
Metzler graduated from Rockhurst High School in 2000, leading his team to four successive Missouri state titles. He won the Missouri state singles championship in 2000 and was the runnerup in 1999. He was the All-Metro Player of the Year in Kansas City in 1999 and 2000. His Rockhurst High team was ranked as the #7 high school tennis team in the nation in the mythical prep rankings in the prep. Andrew was also an honor roll student as a prepster.
Metzler was playing criminal justice while at KU. He was born on December 8, 1981 to Rob and Marcia Metzler. His post college ambition is to work for the FBI.
