WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND - University of North Carolina assistant men's tennis coach Don Johnson saw his dream of winning a pair of Wimbledon doubles championships in the same year come to and end Friday as he and teammate Stephanie Po fell in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
Johnson and Po, the defending Wimbledon champions in the event, lost to Leos Friedl of the Czech Republic and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Johnson, who lives in Carrboro, N.C. and played at UNC from 1987-90, will go after his first ever championship in gentlemen's doubles at Wimbled on Saturday. He and doubles partner Jarred Palmer, Stanford '91, will play for the title on Centre Court immediately after the conclusion of the ladies singles championship.
