UNC Notes Following Saturday's Win Over FSU
UNC Against Ranked Teams: The last time Carolina beat a ranked team was against No. 17 Stanford on Sept. 3, 1997. The last time the Tar Heels beat a Top 10 team was at No. 9 Syracuse on Sept. 3, 1997. Today's 41-9 win over No. 6 Florida State equals the highest ranked team (AP poll) the Tar Heels have ever defeated. In 1960, Carolina defeated No. 6 Duke 7-6 and in 1957 UNC beat sixth-ranked Navy 13-7. Both of those games were also played in Chapel Hill.
Most Points: In the 13-game history of the UNC-FSU series, Carolina had never scored more than 18 points before today's 41-9 win. UNC's previous high came in a 31-18 loss at Tallahassee in 1994.
True Freshmen: Four true freshmen played their first career snaps today for the Tar Heels. OG Chase Page, OT Jason Brown and TB Jacque Lewis all saw time on offense, while walk on James Gibson played on special teams. Lewis rushed five time for 29 yards. His 27-yard run was the second-longest rushing play of the year for UNC.
Career-Long Catch: Chesley Borders's 52-yard third-quarter TD catch was the longest reception of his career and just his second career touchdown catch. It was also the second-longest pass play of the season for Carolina, eclipsed only by Ronald Curry's 53-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter to Kory Bailey.
Reed Gets His Kicks: Jeff Reed, who missed the season-opening Oklahoma game with a sprained ankle and had not handled kickoffs or attempted a field goal all season, handled all kickoffs today and connected on his first field goal of 2001, a 32-yarder in the third quarter to give the Tar Heels a 17-9 advantage and a 39-yarder in the third.
Peppers And Picks: Julius Peppers registered his second interception of the season. Peppers has UNC's only two interceptions in 2001. His third-quarter pick set up a 39-yard field goal by Jeff Reed to give the Tar Heels a 20-9 lead.
Peppers Is Second All-Time In Sacks: When Julius Peppers sacked FSU's Adrian McPherson in the fourth quarter he gained sole possession of second place on the UNC career sack chart with 25.
Curry's Completions: With four completions against the Seminoles, Ronald Curry upped his career completions to 303. He is just the fifth player in UNC history to complete 300 passes in a career.
Forcing Turnovers: UNC, which entered the game ranked 112th in the nation in turnover margin after giving the ball away 11 times to just 3 takeaways, forced five FSU turnovers on Saturday. The last time Carolina forced five turnovers in a game was when is caused six against Duke in 1999.
