Men's Soccer Shuts Out Appalachian State, 3-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina limited Appalachian State to seven shots on goal and shutout the Mountaineers, 3-0, on Monday evening at Fetzer Field on the UNC campus. Senior Noz Yamauchi and juniors Mike Gell and David Testo scored for Carolina in the win. Michael Ueltschey recorded 4 saves in goal for the Tar Heels.
With the win, Carolina improves to2-0 this season. Appalachian falls to 0-1. Dating back to last season, the Tar Heels now have won 17 of their last 18 games.
Carolina opened the scoring at the 10:05 mark on a beautiful reverse header by Gell off a long, high pass from Chris Leitch. The rest of the first half was a scoreless affair, with the two teams amassing a total of 10 shots and 27 fouls between them before halftime. In the game, the two teams combined to commit 55 fouls and were given nine cards.
A minute into the second half, David Testo scored to make it 2-0, UNC. Testo took a pass from Gell and drilled it into the net from 22 yards out, just outside the box. Yamauchi added the final goal of the day for Carolina, connecting on a penalty kick to the lower right corner of the net at the 86:05 mark.
Carolina will return to action next weekend when it faces Cincinnati and Saint Louis in the Saint Louis Soccer Classic on Friday and Sunday in St. Louis, Mo.
