UNC's Johnson Reaches U.S. Open Final

FLUSHING MEADOW, N.Y. - University of North Carolina assistant men's tennis coach Don Johnson and his doubles partner Jared Palmer have advanced to the finals of the U.S. Open after beating Max Miryni of Belarus and Sandon Stolle of Australia Wednesday in the semifinals, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Johnson and Palmer will play for the U.S. Open championship on Friday at 11 a.m. before a national TV audience. The duo earlier won the Wimbledon championship in July. Johnson and Palmer will face Kevin Ullyett of South Africa and Wayne Black of Zimbabwe in the finals Friday.
Johnson also won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 2000. He is a 1990 UNC graduate who spent four years as a Tar Heel player under coach Allen Morris. He has served the past several years as a volunteer assistant coach with UNC head coach Sam Paul. Coach Paul has helped coached Johnson through both major championships this year.
Johnson and Palmer are also awaiting word on whether they will be named to the U.S. Davis Cup Team which will play in Winston-Salem, N.C. on September 22. U.S. Davis Cup head coach Patrick McEnroe will announce the U.S. team for that match on Thursday.
