Men's Tennis Continues Success at ACC Indoors

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team continued its remarkable success at the ACC Indoor Championships Saturday. Carolina advanced junior Trystan Meniane and sophomore Andy Metzler to the singles semifinals and the team of Geoff Boyd and Nicholas Monroe to the doubles final.
Geoff Boyd and Nicholas Monroe, seeded second in the tournament and ranked 29th in the nation, advanced to the doubles final with a 9-7 win over Wake Forest's Mike Murray and Derrick Spice. Boyd and Monroe will face either the number one seeds, Roger Anderson/David Wright of Georgia Tech or Rodrigo Laub/Xaiver Luscan of Florida State at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Saturday began with five Tar Heels among the final 16 in the singles draw. Metzler and Meniane each beat seeded players to advance to the quarterfinal round. Metzler recorded the day's biggest win, upsetting Florida State's Romain Jurd 7-6(13-11), 6-3. Jurd was seeded fourth in the tournament and ranked 66th in the nation. Meniane rallied to defeat eight seed Mike Murray of Wake Forest 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Nicholas Monroe became the third Carolina quarterfinalist with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Wake Forest's Justin Kaufmann. However, Georgia Tech's Joao Menano eliminated Monroe 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the final eight. Two other Tar Heels fell in the round of 16 Saturday.
Freshmen Geoff Boyd was eliminated by second seeded Roger Anderson 6-1, 6-1. After winning the first two matches of his Carolina career on Friday, freshman Jonathan Janda was edged by Georgia Tech's Fabio Campos 6-7(7-2), 6-3, 6-2.
One half of the singles semifinal will pit Carolina's Metzler and Meniane, while Georgia Tech teammates Anderson and Menano will face off in the other semifinal. Metzler defeated Campos 6-3, 6-3 in his quarterfinal match. Meniane beat Florida State's Matt Cloer 7-6(7-3), 7-5 to advance to the semifinals.
