UNC Golfers Tied For Eight Place at Mercedes-Benz Womens Championship

Knoxville, Tenn.-- The University of North Carolina completed the first round of golf at the 2002 Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship tied for eight place with the University of Kentucky with a 26 -over-par, 314. The Tar Heels sluggish performance was indicitive of the golf played by all the teams in the event given the leader in team competition, the Swedish Jr. National Team, finished the day at twelve-over-par,300. In second place is Auburn University at 303. Big Ten Conference foes Purdue and Michigan State are tied at 304 while the University of Nevada Las Vegas round out the top five at 18-over-par, 306.
The bright spot of the day for UNC was the performance of Junior Ashley Prange who was the only golfer to fire even par or better in the 78-player field which gives her sole possession of first place in individual scoring.
Other Tar Heels in action include Junior Meaghan Francella who finished round one at six-over-par, 78. Freshman Jose Shinn and Senior Abby Spector finished at 81 and 83, respectively and Senior Meghan Adams completed the first round with an 85.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at the Gettysvue Polo,Golf Country which features a par 72, 5,985-yard course.
