CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke maintained its lead at the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational after shooting a one-under-par 287 Saturday in their second round. Combined with their two-over first-round score of 290, Duke holds first place by five strokes with a one-over 577 total score and one more round to play.
Duke freshman Liz Janangelo continues to lead the individual race after finishing the second round with a four-under-par 68. She stands at nine-under 135 for the tournament and has a seven shot lead over Kristen White of Ohio State. White shot a pair of 71s in both her rounds for a two-under 142 total.
Janangelo's goal is to keep her focus for the final round on Sunday.
"Every shot matters and everything counts," says Janangelo. "You can't say 'Wow, a nine-under!' because one hole can get you. You have to keep looking forward and keep getting better and better."
Kristy McPherson of South Carolina is in third place individually, eight shots back of the lead. On Friday, she shot a one-under 71, and she shot an even par 72 in her second round. A trio of players - Liliana Alvarez of Tulane, Kristin Tamulis of Florida State and Leigh Anne Hardin of Duke - are tied for fourth place. All three are at an 11-over 145 for the tournament.
Oklahoma State moved from fourth to second place after finishing the second round with the low score of the day. Their five-under-par 283 put them at 582 for the tournament. After being in second place, North Carolina scored another 296, falling one place in the standings to third. Florida State and Ohio State are tied for fourth place at 17-over.
Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks said that his team's second round score could have been even lower if they had avoided having a few "leaks" toward the end of the round. However, he said that he was still happier with their second round score.
"(The score) is obviously a lower number and it's nice to have Liz get that 67," said Brooks. "But it's really great when you have other players doing well."
Duke currently has four players in the top 25 after two rounds. Brooks wants his players to continue to set their own standards and to have their own way of measuring their success.
"In golf, you sort of try not to pay attention to what everyone else is doing and you just play to your standard," Brooks said. "And we've been on this course enough to know what our standard is."
The final round of the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational will be played Sunday with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. The tournament is being played at UNC's Finley Golf Course, a par 72, 6,181-yard layout. There is no admission and the public is invited to attend.
