Something was a little different at the Inter-Faith Council Community House in Chapel Hill last week. The volunteers in the kitchen - preparing, cooking and serving - were a little bigger, a little stronger and wore a little more Carolina Blue. They were 13 members of the Carolina football team and head coach John Bunting giving back to the community, something the team does on a regular basis.
Along with Coach Bunting, players Alden Blizzard, Drew Hunter, Brian Chacos, Doug Justice, James Faison, Sean Williams, Dan Orner, Arthur Smith, Michael Harris, Paul Roberts, Greg Warren, Bryant Macklin and Ned Kelly drew a larger crowd than usual at the soup kitchen last Monday night.
"The response was good," said assistant AD Corey Holliday, in charge of the team's community relations. "People had been talking about the players, arrival for a week -- they were looking forward to meeting the players and Coach Bunting."
The players can frequently be found donating their time to the local community -- participating in reading programs at elementary schools and spending time at the hospital, where they'll be before the NC State game this weekend.
"The players really appreciate doing this sort of thing," Holliday said. "It's their opportunity to give back to the community. They feel very fortunate to be playing football here at UNC."
