Durant set UNC records for most total yards (426) and most passing yards (417) and tied the school record with five touchdown passes in Carolina's 38-35 win at Arizona State. Durant broke Mark Maye's total offense record (420 yards vs. Georgia Tech in 1987) and Chris Keldorf's passing yardage figure (415 yards vs. TCU in 1997). Kevin Anthony (vs. Wake Forest, 1985) is the only other Tar Heel to throw five TD passes in a single game.
orders set the Tar Heel single-game record with four touchdown catches. He had a career-high nine receptions overall for 192 yards. That is the third-highest receiving yardage game in Carolina history. Previously, seven different UNC players had made three touchdown catches in a single game.
Other nominees:
Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox earned her first two victories in a Tar Heel uniform this weekend in the Carolina Fall Softball Tournament. The right-hander picked up her first win in relief in game two of the tourney versus UNC Wilmington, pitching three innings and striking out five. In game four, she started against Charlotte and retired the first nine batters she faced. The Harrisburg, N.C. native, didn't allow a hit in four innings of work and struck out four 49er hitters. Her totals for the weekend were; 2-0, 7.0 IP, one hit, no runs and eight strikeouts.
Meredith Keller, a senior midfielder from Greenville, Del., scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in UNC field hockey's 5-4 double-overtime victory at Duke on Saturday.
Ashley Prange, a junior from Noblesville, Ind., tied for ninth place in last weekend's Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational posting a 221 total after carding rounds of 74-72-75. Prange led the Tar Heels to a fifth-place finish with an 890 total after rounds of 296-296-298. Prange was also low for Carolina at last weekend's ACC/SEC Challenge in Destin, Fla. She leads the Tar Heels with a 73.19 scoring average.
Leslie Gaston's stellar defense led UNC to its fourth and fifth shutouts in a row this past weekend as UNC defeated #1-ranked Stanford 1-0 and host Saint Mary's 3-0 to win the championship of the 2002 Saint Mary's College Fall Soccer Classic in Moraga, Calif. Gaston is a senior defender from Montgomery, Ala. With Catherine Reddick missing from the UNC lineup in five of Carolina's last six matches (she was with the US National Team), Gaston has led UNC to a 5-0-1 record over those games with a scoreless streak of 556 minutes and 20 seconds.
