The fall schedule of the third annual Carlyle Cup competition concludes Saturday with the annual Carolina-Duke football game in Durham at Noon. Despite 2-9 records of both the Tar Heel and Blue Devil football teams, the game is important in the closest Carlyle Cup race to date.
The Carlyle Cup is an all-sports competition between the old rivals that is sponsored by Carlyle & Co. fine jewelers and its various vendors such as Rolex. The schools compete in 20 men1s and women1s sports from fall through spring, with 48 total points at stake. Duke won the inaugural cup in 2000-2001 by the score of 27-21. UNC won last year, 31-17.
Carolina currently holds an 8.5 to 5.5 lead in this year1s race. The football game is worth three points, creating a six-point swing in the overall standings. A win for Duke, which has dropped 12 straight in football to the Tar Heels, would even the Carlyle Cup. Carolina1s 13th straight win on the gridiron would provide a six-point lead and some breathing room heading into the winter, where eight points are a stake (three each for men1s and women1s basketball, one each for wrestling and fencing).
The Tar Heels have already swept points in field hockey (3), volleyball (3) and overall swimming (1) and split 3 points in women1s soccer with a scoreless tie. Besides their 1.5 points from women1s soccer, the Blue Devils also have points in men1s soccer (3) and cross country (1).
In the first two years of the Carlyle Cup, Carolina held commanding 16-1 leads after the fall competition. Duke closed the gap in the winter each year, creating a close race for the 23 points that are at stake in the spring sports.
