UNC Women's Golf Team Wins Pine Needles Invitational

Southern Pines, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team won the 2002 Pine Needles Invitational by virtue of the strong play of individual scoring champion Abby Spector and runner-up Ashley Prange. The individual score of Meghan Adams, who finished third, did not figure in UNC's team standings becaused she played as an individual.
At the end of the day UNC golf coach Sally Austin was ready to praise her team. "I am extremely proud of my entire team," said Austin. "We worked hard and it was a fun tournament. We continued to focus thoughout the tournament and I was really proud that our team took the top three individual spots."
Spector captured the individual championship, the first win of her collegiate career, posting a 218 total after rounds of 76-70-72. Teammate Prange finished one shot back at 219 with rounds of 74-73-72 while Adams carded a 220 total with rounds of 74-72-74.
Other Tar Heels playing in the tournament included Beth Marushak who finished alone in 10th place with a 54 hole total of 229 after firing rounds of 76-76-77 while Meaghan Francella tied for 22nd at 234 with scores of 78-73-83. Josie Shinn and Stacy Hilton completed the three rounds tied for 42nd and 44th, respectively.
In team competion, NC State placed second at 907 while Baylor University could only manage a combined score of 919. Two Florida schools, Rollins College and Miami University, rounded out the top five.
The UNC women's golf team will next see action in 2003 when Tar Heels travel to Columbia, South Carolina to play in the Lady Gamecock Classic on the weekend of March 14-16.
