Former Tar Heel Tripp Phillips Ascends in World Rankings

Chapel Hill, NC - Former Carolina All-American Tripp Phillips continues his successful second year in professional tennis. Phillips has won four consecutive doubles titles and has seen his ATP world ranking rise over 150 places since April.
Phillips has won all four events with Chapel Hill, N.C. native Huntley Montgomery. The duo began their streak Oct. 6 at the $50,000 Mercedes-Benz Challenger in Fresno, Calif. where they defeated Ignacio Hirigoyen of Argentina and Daniel Melo of Brazil 6-4, 6-3. Montgomery and Phillips swept through Texas over the next two weeks winning $15,000 ATP Futures events in Tyler and Lubbox each in straight sets.
On Sunday Montgomery and Phillips defeated Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-1 at the $15,000 City of Hammond Tennis Classic outside of New Orleans, La. Baker is the number one ranked American junior player in the ITF world singles and doubles rankings. Phillips has won 12 doubles titles since turning pro in the summer of 2000. He is currently ranked #216 in the ATP World Doubles Rankings.
Phillips also turned in an outstanding singles performance in Louisiana. Phillips defeated Paraguays's Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Baker and John Paul Fruttero before losing the singles final to Michael Joyce 7-6(8), 7-6(1). Phillips will continue to train at UNC's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center this week in preparation for the $50,000 Knoxville Challenger beginning Sunday.
