CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The young Tar Heels of North Carolina, playing with only one senior on their roster, hope to continue an outstanding start to the 2002 season when they meet the #31 South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. Saturday. The match is at 1 p.m. and will be played outdoors.
Carolina heads into the match with a 4-1 record with the only loss coming at the hands of Top 20 team Texas by a 4-3 score. UNC has won five of its head-to-head matchups against the Gamecocks since Sam Paul became UNC head coach in 1994. The all-time series record has North Carolina in the lead 36-15-1.
Carolina's lineup is headed by senior Marcio Petrone at #1 singles. Other singles starters for Carolina are junior Trystan Meniane, sophomores Nicholas Monroe and Andrew Metzler and freshmen Daniel Pinchbeck and Geoff Boyd. Pinchbeck heads into the match against the Gamecocks having won 52 successive games in singles and doubles.
