CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina and California split a baseball doubleheader on a chilly Friday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Cal opened the afternoon with a 4-2 win over the Tar Heels, but UNC responded with a 7-5 win in the nightcap.
Daniel Moore (1-0) struck out a career-high 12 batters in 7.2 innings, the longest outing of his career for the UNC win, while Ryan Blake and Chad Prosser were both 3-for-4 and Adam Greenberg added two hits to pace the Tar Heels at the plate in matching a season-high 12 hits in the second game of the doubleheader. Prosser was 5-for-7 overall on the day after going 2-for-3 in the day's first game.
"I felt great out there today," Moore said. "I felt like I was getting stronger as the game went on. This was a big win for us."
Greenberg led off the game with a triple down the right field line and scored the game's first run on a ground out by Chris Maples, while Ron Braun singled home Blake in the second inning for a 2-0 lead.
Carson White nailed a three-run homer over the fence in right-center field to give Cal a 3-2 lead in the third, but the Tar Heels went ahead for good with five runs in the fourth. Prosser had a two-run single, Adams a two-run double and Maples an RBI single to pace Carolina in their big five-run inning.
Cal added two final runs in the eighth and Maples closed the game, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for his first save. Maples struck out the side in the ninth.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Cal rode the stellar pitching of ace Trevor Hutchinson (4-1) to a 4-2 win. The senior right-hander allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out eight in the complete game win.
Carolina led 2-0 early in the opener, with Greenberg scoring on a passed ball in the first and Chad Prosser adding a two-out RBI double in the second inning, but Cal answered with four late runs for the two-run victory.
UNC starter Scott Autrey (0-1) was off to his strongest start of the season but ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh innings. Autrey struck out four, walked one and had allowed just one hit through five, but Justin Nelson homered to lead off the sixth and the Golden Bears chased Autrey in the seventh with four consecutive one-out singles. Jeff Dragicevich's RBI single was the game-winner, pushing Cal ahead 3-2. The Golden Bears added their fourth run in the eighth inning for the final 4-2 margin.
The Tar Heels and Golden Bears will attempt to complete their three-game set Saturday at 1 p.m., weather permitting.
