Gymnastics Coach Receives Top Coaching Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina gymnastics head coach Derek Galvin received 2002 EAGL Coach of the Year honors following his team's stunning win at the seventh annual EAGL Championships with an EAGL and UNC record of 196.425.
Galvin has been the gymnastics coach at Carolina since 1982 the first year women's gymnastics was recognized by the NCAA. He has taken seven teams, including this years team, and 16 individuals to the NCAA Regional meet since he began at Carolina. The 2002 Carolina team will be Carolina's first appearance as a team at the Southeast Regionals since the 1991 Tar Heel team finished fifth.
After the 2000 EAGL Championships where his team finished seventh, Galvin was named 2000 EAGL Coach of the Year. Galvin is a graduate of Carolina and was on the Carolina men's team before it was discontinued in 1974. He is an active member of the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches and has served as a clinician of several USA Gymnastics and NCAA Y.E.S. clinics.
Galvin and the Carolina gymnastics team will head to Morgantown, W.Va. to compete in the Southeast Regionals on April 6 against No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 19 West Virginia, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 Michigan State.
