CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Maryland swept an Atlantic Coast Conference doubleheader from the North Carolina softball team Saturday, winning 3-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second at the UNC Softball Complex. Maryland is now 30-18 on the season, 2-3 in the ACC, while Carolina fell to 30-25 overall and finished conference play 2-6.
Game 1 was scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Maryland put two runs on the board with a two-RBI double by second baseman Jen Peel. The Terrapins scored one more in the top of the sixth when catcher Beth Radford led off the inning with a double. Amanda Kipnis pinch ran for her and scored two batters later on a single down the right field line by Jillian Callaway.
Maryland's Amanda Bettker pitched the complete-game shutout, giving up just three hits and striking out two. Freshman Ashley Allen threw the first five innings for UNC but left the game after injuring her wrist sliding into second in the bottom of the fifth. The injury was later diagnosed as a fracture to her left wrist, and the right-hander's status for the rest of the season is questionable.
In Game 2, Maryland scored two runs in the top of the first on three hits, including a two-run double by designated player Monica Cyphert. The Terrapins scored another run in the top of the fourth on outfielder Samantha Sweeney's RBI double. Cyphert added a two-run homer in the seventh to finish 2-for-3 with four RBI for the game.
UNC's only run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth when Sarah Young (pinch running for Natalie Anter, who reached on a walk) scored on a double to center by first baseman Kelly Ramsey.
Anter drew three walks on the day, one of them intentional, to raise her season total to 35, a UNC record. The old mark was held by Christine Kubin, who had 33 walks in 1996.
Jessica Aditays earned the win in Game 2, giving up one run on three hits in four innings. Bettker closed out the game, holding UNC hitless in the final three innings to earn the save. Shannon Walsh took the loss for UNC.
"I credit their pitching staff, especially Bettker," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "They did a good job today. I don't think our hitters made good adjustments at the plate, and hitting has been our forte.
"It was not one of our better days, and losing Ashley on top of it is really difficult. Hopefully we'll finish our home season strong on Monday."
The Tar Heels host East Carolina Monday afternoon for the final home games of the 2002 season. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m., following ceremonies to honor UNC's five seniors. The first 125 fans to arrive at UNC Softball Complex will receive free North Carolina softball mugs, courtesy of Domino's.
