CHAPEL HILL - No. 21 North Carolina held off Coastal Carolina, 11-7, Wednesday evening in a non-conference baseball game at Boshamer Stadium. Adam Greenberg homered twice for the Tar Heels (21-9), who have won 15 of their last 16 games, and eight straight against the Chanticleers (19-11).
UNC and Coastal were back and forth throughout the early innings of the game before Carolina blew the game open with four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. Greenberg finished 2-for-4 and scored three times, while Chad Prosser was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Ron Braun was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs and Chris Iannetta batted 2-for-4 and scored twice. Chris Maples had an eighth inning single to extend his career-long hitting streak to 14 games.
Ryan McGraw doubled and scored for the Chants in the first, but Greenberg sparked a three-run bottom half of the inning with his fourth leadoff home run of the season. The sophomore center fielder homered again in the second, a solo shot to right for a 4-3 Carolina advantage. Greenberg has nine home runs in 2002.
"Their pitcher got behind in the count in my first at bat, so I was gearing up for a fastball," Greenberg said. "I got all of it."
Coastal tied the game, 4-4, with an unearned third inning run, but Braun sent a two-run homer over the center field fence for a 6-4 UNC lead in the bottom of the inning. Coastal again tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but a two-out error by Chad Felty in right field extended the inning and allowed UNC to score four runs and jump ahead 10-6. Chad Prosser's two-run single highlighted the inning for Carolina.
Braun walked and scored for UNC in the seventh, while Coastal's Adam Keim led off the eighth with a home run to cap the scoring.
"Adam's been hitting for power, for average, stealing bases - he's doing it all this year," Fox said of Greenberg, the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year. "He's having the kind of year he had as a freshman, and he's been a huge catalyst for us. He's so fun to watch."
Kevin Brower (3-0) struck out three batters in two hitless innings out of the bullpen for the win, while Byron Binda (4-1) gave up six runs in three innings for his first loss. Chris Maples struck out the side in the ninth and earned his third save.
The Tar Heels hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at Wake Forest. Carolina leads the overall series between the two schools 134-111-4 but has dropped eight straight games to the Demon Deacons over the last two seasons.
