UNC Softball Takes Two From Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Virginia claimed the Tar Heel Invitational softball tournament title Sunday with a 10-5 victory against Georgia Tech in the championship game. In the consolation game, host North Carolina beat Maryland 7-3.
UVa senior Kristen Dennis earned all four wins to claim MVP honors as the Cavaliers finished tournament play 4-0. Georgia Tech and North Carolina both finished the weekend 2-2, while Maryland went 0-4.

Virginia 1, Georgia Tech 0:
In the first game of the day, the Cavaliers scored a run in the top of the first and held on for the win. Leadoff batter Heather Field walked and eventually came home on an RBI double by Kristen Dennis, who had another double in her only other at-bat. Dennis struck out three and gave up five hits to earn the shutout win.North Carolina 8, Maryland 3: UNC had nine hits, including home runs by Natalie Anter and Jessica Young, to earn its first win of the tournament. After going 0-2 on Saturday, the Tar Heels trailed 1-0 early. Young's RBI double got Carolina on the board in the bottom of the second. With the score tied 1-1 in the third, Anter hit a three-run shot, her 12th of the season, to put UNC up 4-1. Carolina put four more runs on the board in the fifth on Young's three-run shot and an RBI single by pitcher Ashley Allen. Maryland's Beth Radford hit a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh to bring the final score to 8-3.
Championship game--Virginia 10, Georgia Tech 5: Virginia led 5-0 after four innings, following Stephanie Calhoun's three-run homer in the first, Ruby Rojas' RBI single in the third and an unearned run in the fourth. Georgia Tech's Tasha Waugh scored first for the Jackets with a solo home run with two outs in the fifth. Tech scored four more runs in the top of the sixth on a hit and three Virginia errors. The Cavaliers came right back with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. Virginia's Kelly McCabe was 3-for-3 at the plate and Calhoun was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Virginia's Erin Allinder and Kristen Dennis combined to give up three hits and just one earned run.
Consolation game--North Carolina 7, Maryland 3: Freshman pitcher Brandi Griffin earned the win and helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Making her first start on the mound, Griffin gave up six hits and struck out two in seven innings. The Terrapins led 2-0 early after runners scored on a wild pitch and a walk. Quinn Porter's solo homer in the bottom of the inning put UNC on the board, and Griffin had an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. Maryland's Monica Cyphert hit a solo home run in the fifth to pull the Terps ahead 3-2 before UNC came up with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. Natalie Anter hit an RBI double and Jessica Young brought in another run with a sacrifice fly. After an RBI single by Kelly Ramsey, Griffin hit a two-run shot to left center.
