The uniform is similar in color to the uniform head coach John Bunting wore as a linebacker for the Tar Heels in the early 1970s.
Last season, Bunting elminated the dark blue outline around the interlocking NC that appeared on the helmet.
"In my opinion, the Carolina uniform is the best in the country," said Bunting. "Carolina Blue is a unique color and I wanted to emphasize that color in the uniform and eliminate some of the dark blue from last year's design. I think our fans will be happy with the uniform and I know our team will be excited to wear them for the first time on August 31 against Miami (Ohio)."

Through the years the Carolina football uniform has undergone a number of changes. Below are photos of the uniform beginning with (l-r) Don McCauley in 1970, Lawrence Taylor in 1980, Chris Keldorf in 1997 and Julius Peppers in 2001.
