Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- The University of North Carolina football team wrapped up a two-week regiment of two-a-day practices with just one workout on Monday as head coach John Bunting gave the team the afternoon off.
In the morning session, Carolina practiced in shorts and shoulder pads under extremely hot conditions in preparation for the season opener against Miami (Ohio) on August 31 at 1:30 p.m. Will Chapman, who started the first eight games last year at defensive tackle before injuring his knee at Clemson, was moved to defensive end during the practice and likely will work with the ends throughout the rest of preseason workouts.
"That's a move we decided we needed to make," said Bunting. "He's been there before and we know he can play the position. We haven't been satisfied with the (defensive) end play and we have some depth at tackle that allows us to make this move. I've been pleased with the way (tackles) Donti Coats and Eric Davis have played and we got Chase Page back (from injury) today."
unting also continues to experiment with safety DeFonte Coleman at linebacker in an effort to provide more depth at arguably the Tar Heels weakest position.
"We are continuing to move some guys around, but not much," said Bunting. "DeFonte has worked some at safety and linebacker because he's a bigger guy who we think could make the change. Everyone who follows Carolina football knows that we are the thinnest at linebacker."
Linebacker Doug Justice, who sprained his ankle in Saturday night's scrimmage, was held out of practice along with offensive tackle Skip Seagraves (sprained back), defensive tackle Carl Smalls (back strain) and linebacker Victor Worsley (shoulder sprain).
