North Carolina's Dan Orner has been named one of the Lou Groza Award's Top Three Stars in week three of the college football season. The other stars of the week were Aaron Hunt from Clemson and Bryan Borreson of Utah. Orner tied an NCAA record with three kicks of 50 yards or longer in a single game against Syracuse. Orner kicked a 52, 51 and school-record 55-yarder in the 30-22 victory.
All Division I-A kickers are eligible for consideration for the Lou Groza Award. A panel of over 300 people made up of Division I-A head coaches, sports writers and sportscasters, conference representatives, professional kickers, and all previous Groza Award finalists votes upon the award.
Each week through November 4, the 30 candidates on the Pre-season Groza Watch List will be highlighted. The 20 semi-finalists for the Lou Groza Award will be announced on November 4, followed two weeks later by the naming of the three Lou Groza Award finalists on November 18.
The Palm Beach County Sports Commission will host the 11th annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl, on Tuesday, December 10 at the Sheraton West Palm Beach Hotel at CityPlace. This is an event of the Palm Beach County Sports Institute.
The award is named for NFL Hall-of-Fame Kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza and is sponsored by AvMed, BankAtlantic, The Breakers, Continental Airlines, ESPN, Florida Coca-Cola Bottling, JBS Destination Solutions, Palm Beach Kennel Club, The Palm Beach Post, Parallax Productions, Rooney's Public House, Sheraton West Palm Beach at CityPlace, and WPEC News 12.
