September 29, 2002 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The seventh-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team fell to 1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to visiting Wake Forest, ranked third in the nation. UNC is now 6-4 overall and Wake is 7-2, 3-0 in the ACC.
Carolina scored first, in the 21st minute of play. On a penalty corner, senior Meredith Keller executed the stick stop and pushed the ball to senior Stephanie Fuller, who passed it right back. Keller's shot put UNC up 1-0, but the lead was short-lived. Less than a minute later Wake Forest evened the score on a penalty corner, the Demon Deacons' sixth of seven in the half. Junior Lucy Shaw took the initial hit and sophomore Claire Laubach tipped in into the net.
Wake got the game-winner with just over 20 minutes remaining when Laubach hit the ball into the circle and sophomore Kelly Dostal tipped it into the goal.
The Demon Deacons dominated the scoring opportunities in the first half, with 11 shots on goal to six by UNC, but the Tar Heels got more chances in the second. UNC totalled seven second-half shots and six penalty corners to three of each by the Demon Deacons.
Sunday's win was Wake Forest's fourth in a row over UNC. The teams will meet again on Oct. 20 in Winston-Salem, N.C., for a non-conference game.
Carolina is back in action on Saturday with another ACC game, a 1 p.m. contest at Duke. Wake Forest travels to Massachusetts next weekend to take on Harvard and the University of Massachusetts.
