Chapel Hill - The defending national champion University of North Carolina men's soccer team lost its first game of the 2002 season on Saturday night, dropping a 1-0 decision to Davidson on Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Keith Nicholson scored the game's only goal early in the second half and the Wildcats held on to win.
The loss ends a 15-game home winning streak and an eight-game winning streak overall for the Tar Heels (3-1), who last had lost to Clemson in the 2001 ACC Tournament semfinals last November. Davidson improves to 2-0-1 with the victory.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with Davidson focusing on defense and Carolina out-shooting the Wildcats, 7-1, prior to halftime.
Nicholson scored the game's only goal five minutes into the second half. As a Tar Heel defender failed to clear a crossing pass, the ball came directly to Nicholson and deflected off of him, over UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Wildcat lead that would be the final margin.
Carolina will return to action next weekend when it takes part in the Brown Classic in Providence, R.I. The Tar Heels will face Yale on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. and will face Brown on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
