CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Unbeaten it last seven outings, the third-ranked North Carolina men's soccer team (10-1-3, 2-1-1 ACC) aims for its first road win of the season Wednesday when its travels to Davidson (9-3-2, 4-1 SoCon) for a 7 p.m. meeting.
A year ago, the Wildcats topped the Tar Heels, 1-0, in Chapel Hill, and the Sept. 7, 2002, loss is the last at Fetzer Field for Carolina, who is 5-0 at home this year. UNC leads the all-time series with Davidson, 22-4-2, and last won on the road 3-2 in 1999. The Wildcats last beat Carolina at home by a 2-0 score in 1997.
On the road this year, the Tar Heels have lost just once but have yet to pick up a victory in four matches. Carolina has tied Vermont, George Mason and NC State in its last outing. Freshman forward Jamie Watson scored in the 70th minute against the Wolfpack to lift UNC to the tie.
With the goal, Watson tied junior forward Marcus Storey for the team scoring lead with 15 points. Watson has five goals and five assists on the year, while Storey has picked up six goals and three assists.
Defensively, Carolina has allowed just two goals in its last six games. Senior co-captains Sean McGinty and Grant Porter, as well as juniors Ray Fumo and Tim Merritt anchor the experienced Tar Heel backline. Goal keepers Justin Hughes and Ford Williams have combined to post a 0.53 goals against average, which ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Davidson's scoring attack is led by Jeff Davis, who has scored seven goals and assisted on four others. Nick Hansell has added five goals. The Wildcats have scored four goals in each of their last two games, wins over Elon and Appalachian State. Bart Creasman is Davidson's goal keeper, and he owns a 0.76 goals against average in 10 games. Davidson is 1-0 against the ACC this season with a 2-0 win over Duke on Oct. 1.
Carolina returns to action Saturday for an important ACC match at No. 5 Wake Forest at 7 p.m.
