CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coming off its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1995 and 1996, the North Carolina men's lacrosse team will play a 12-match regular season schedule in 2004 and play host to the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Fetzer Field. Coach John Haus is set to begin his fourth season as the Tar Heels' head coach after leading UNC to a 6-6 record in 2001, an 8-5 mark in 2002 and a 7-6 ledger in 2003.
Carolina returns a host of lettermen and the majority of its starting lineup from last year's team. Altogether six seniors graduated led by All-America midfielder Austin Garrison.
UNC will play 12 regular season matches, six at home, five on the road and one at a neutral site. Five opponents played in the 2003 NCAA Tournament including three of the semifinalists and the two finalists.
Carolina will open the season against Massachusetts on February 28 in Baltimore as five of UNC's first six matches will come away from the friendly confines of Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels' home opener comes against Navy on March 5 but that match will be followed by a three-game road trip over spring break to play Denver, Air Force and Notre Dame.
After opening its ACC season at Duke on March 20, the Tar Heels will play five of their last six regular season games at home against Cornell, Maryland, Virginia, UMBC and Ohio State. The only road trip after March 20 is to play Johns Hopkins on April 3.
Carolina will play host to the 16th annual ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship at Fetzer Field on April 23 and 25. The Tar Heels previously hosted the tournament in 1989, 1995 and 1999.
