CHAPEL HILL -- With eight games against teams that were part of the 2003 NCAA Tournament field, the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team once again will play a difficult schedule in 2004.
The slate includes matchups with Atlantic Coast Conference foes Maryland, Virginia and Duke, as well as non-conference NCAA Tournament qualifiers UMBC, Loyola, Ohio State, Georgetown and Dartmouth. Loyola, Duke and Ohio State will all play the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.
"We're playing a very difficult schedule once again," said head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy, who is entering her ninth season as Carolina's head coach. "The ACC is always so tough, and we're playing five non-conference games against teams that went to the 2003 NCAA Tournament. Our team was very young last spring, but we should be better next season. This type of schedule will prepare us for what we hope will be a return to the NCAA Tournament in 2004."
Carolina will host the 2003 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, an annual event featuring UNC, Maryland, Penn State and Ohio State, for the first time on March 26 and 28. The Tar Heels also will host the ACC Tournament for the second time. Both the men's and women's ACC championships will be played in Chapel Hill on Apr. 23 and 25.
The Tar Heels, who went 7-9 overall and 0-3 in ACC play in 2003, are coming off the first losing season in school history. Carolina returns its top seven scorers and 10 starters from its '03 squad, including leading scorer Beth Ames.
