Lindsay Tarpley & Ronnie McGill Named Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athletes of the Week

CHAPEL HILL -- Freshman tailback Ronnie McGill and sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley are co-winners of the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week award for November 3-9, 2003. McGill rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns in UNC's win over Wake Forest; Tarpley was the MVP as the Tar Heels won their 15th consecutive ACC Women's Soccer Tournament.

True freshman tailback Ronnie McGill rushed for 244 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns in Carolina's 42-34 victory over Wake Forest. McGill's 244 yards are the sixth-highest single-game total in the country this season and the most by any player in the ACC this year. It is also the third-highest single-game total by a UNC freshman and the ninth-highest single-game total in school history. It is the most for a Tar Heel since Natrone Means had 249 yards rushing against Maryland in 1992. McGill, who had just 20 yards rushing at halftime, set a school record with 224 yards rushing in the second half, including a 66-yard run that set up a Carolina field goal. McGill scored on runs of 6, 5 and 34 yards, becoming the first Tar Heel since Leon Johnson in 1996 to rush for three TDs in a game.

Tarpley was named the MVP of the ACC Tournament as UNC won its 15th ACC championship in a row. Tarpley is the first player to be named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and lead the ACC in scoring since Mia Hamm in 1992. Tarpley had a goal and an ACC Tournament record five assists during the three games.

Davidson led the Tar Heels against No. 8 ranked Minnesota and North Dakota as UNC split the two meets. Davidson's times in the 200 IM and the 400 IM were both career best times for the freshman. Davidson's times rank No. 2 in the ACC in the 100 breast and 200 IM and No. 3 in the 400 IM.

Weeks won three events to lead the Tar Heels to wins over Minnesota and North Dakota in Minneapolis. Her times now rank No. 1 in the ACC in the 200 fly, No. 3 in the ACC in the 1000 free and No. 3 in the ACC in the 500 free.

Ashe tallied the lone goal in Carolina's 1-0 victory at South Carolina Saturday. The win snapped a two-match losing streak for the Tar Heels, who open the 2003 ACC Tournament against NC State Wednesday. On the season, Ashe is third on the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists.

Nyenhuis led Carolina to a 3-2 win over Maryland, as she had 18 kills, 12 digs, four service aces and three blocks in the match. She also had a career high 28 kills to go along with 21 digs in a 3-2 loss to Virginia.
