UNC Women's Golfers Eliminated from Hooters Match Play

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. - North Carolina's women's golf team was eliminated from the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship after losing their first two matches in the modified double-elimination event. Carolina lost to UCLA, 3-2, in the first round on Sunday and then lost to Oklahoma State, 4-1, in the second round, which was completed Monday after being called due to darkness on Sunday.
In the UCLA match, senior Ashley Prange and freshman Katie Miller both won their matches. Prange, from Noblesville, Ind., defeated Hannah Jun, 3 and 2, while Miller, from Jeannette, Pa., defeated Yvonne Choe, 5 and 3. Fourth-seeded UCLA won the other three matches over the 13th-seeded Tar Heels as Charlotte Mayorkas defeated Meaghan Francella, from Port Chester, N.Y., 2 and 1; Susie Matthews defeated Romi Irons, from Austin, Texas, 5 and 3; and Krystal Shearer defeated Shannon Boyle, from Cary, N.C., 7 and 6.
The Tar Heels then played fifth-seeded Oklahoma State and were able to win only one of the five matches. Carolina's Miller defeated Mallory Underwood, 3 and 2. Oklahoma State was victorious in the other matches: Annie Thurman defeated Francella, 2 and 1; Ashley Knoll defeated Prange, 5 and 4; Karin Sjodin defeated Irons, 5 and 4; and Jennifer Karr defeated Boyle, 2 and 1.
This event concludes Carolina's fall campaign. The Tar Heels begin their spring season March 5-7 at the LSU Cleveland Golf Classic in Baton Rouge.
