Reddick Captures Honda Soccer Award

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The University of North Carolina's Catherine Reddick, a senior who was named the NCAA Tournament's Most ValuableDefensive Player as UNC won the 2003 NCAA soccer championship, has been named the nation's most outstanding collegiate woman athlete in her sport, according to results of national balloting among NCAA member schools. For winning, Reddick will receive the Honda Award, given annually to the top woman student athlete in 12 sports.
Reddick also is automatically nominated for Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year honors along with athletes voted the most outstanding in cross country, field hockey, volleyball, swimming/diving, basketball, gymnastics, golf, tennis, softball, lacrosse and track & field. The Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year will be determined in June by separate balloting involving all NCAA-member institutions and will receive the Honda-Broderick Cup.
Reddick, a native of Birmingham, Ala., was voted the honor over the other finalists who included Joanna Lohman of Penn State; Nandi Pryce of UCLA, and Lindsay Tarpley, Reddick's teammate at Carolina. Nominees were selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association.
Reddick keyed UNC's defense as the team blanked all six of its opponents during the NCAA tournament. North Carolina registered 19 shutouts during a perfect 27-0-0 season.The team led the nation in fewest goals allowed per game, 0.40. Reddick contributed six goals and five assists as well. She rejoined the team in mid-season after starting on defense for the U.S. World Cup team. She is a three-time consensus first-team All-America selection and three-time first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice.
