CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--For the second week in a row, Freshman Courtney Bumpers of Stone Mountain, Ga., has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week. She was awarded the title for the week of Feb. 3-Feb. 9 as a result of her performance at the Governor's Cup, a quad meet pairing two North Carolina universities (UNC and NC State) against two Maryland universities (Towson and Maryland), at NC State Saturday.
umpers' greatest achievement of the night was her 10.0 in floor exercise, the season's second perfect score by a Tar Heel gymnast but only the third in school history. The score follows Junior Anna Wilson's career-high 10.0 in floor exercise the week before at Carolina's first home meet. Wilson's and Bumpers' scores have been the only perfect 10's earned by EAGL gymnasts this year.
"It just puts an exclamation point on everything," Wilson said about Bumpers' score. "She is great, a fresh attribute to the team. She was happy for me (when I earned my first 10.0), and I was even happier for her."
umpers completed the dynamic night by earning personal bests in every event. Her 9.900 on the balance beam was good enough for first place in the event. She placed third on vault with a score of 9.900 and fifth on bars with a 9.800.
umpers' first place finish in the all-around marked the fourth time she has won the all-around title in as many meets. Her score of 39.600 set a school record, one previously held by Brooke Wilson (39.500), a member of the 1998-2001 team.
The Tar Heels won the meet to remain the only undefeated team in the EAGL (12-0). Collectively, the gymnasts set records on vault (49.175) and floor exercise (49.650). The total score of 196.775 was not only a Carolina record but also the highest score of any EAGL team so far this season.
