CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team is ranked No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Assosciation (IWLCA) preseason poll for 2003, the IWLCA announced on Thursday night. The Tar Heels are one of four Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the top 10, joining No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Virginia and No. 6 Maryland.
Princeton, the defending national champion, is ranked No. 1 with 189 points overall. Duke is just behind at No. 2 with 187 points, followed by No. 3 Virginia with 184 points. Georgetown is No. 4 and Loyola is No. 5. The second half of the top 10 is Maryland, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Cornell and Carolina.
The Tar Heels won a school-record 17 games and the ACC championship in 2002, reaching the NCAA Final Four for a third time in program history. However, the Tar Heels must replace their top four scorers and six starters overall from last spring.
Carolina opens exhibition play for 2003 this weekend at the South of the Border Tournament in Chapel Hill and Durham. The Tar Heels will begin regular-season play next weekend when they host Davidson on Sunday Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in Henry Stadium.
