YPSILANTI, Mich. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team cruised this afternoon to a 19-point win over Eastern Michigan, 25-9. Sophomore Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) moved into sixth place in single season school records with his 13th pin of the season. Sophomore Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) earned his 11th straight victory this afternoon to gain his 27th win of the season to pace the Tar Heels. UNC improves to 9-5, while EMU falls to 7-9.
Carolina led the Eagles 8-6 early as freshman Garrett Atkinson (Boone, N.C.) earned a major decision at 165 pounds and sophomore Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) scored four points with another major decision. After sophomore Dustin Heist (Meadville, Pa.) dropped a close 8-7 decision to EMU's Ed Magrys, Carolina ripped off five straight matches highlighted by a 21-second pin by Rodrigues over EMU's William Green.
Sola earned his 11th straight win with a 7-0 decision over the Eagles' Zac Plyes. Other Tar Heels that earned victories this afternoon were sophomore Venroy July (Bronx, N.Y.) at 197 pounds, junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, N.C.) at heavyweight and freshman Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) at 149 pounds.
North Carolina will travel to Appalachian State, Feb. 23 for a non-conference battle. The dual match will be at 2 p.m.
