WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The University of North Carolina women's lax team battled to a 6-6 draw at William & Mary on Friday evening in what amounted to a dress rehearsal for both squads.
The cool, rainy conditions did not detract from the quality of the action, as each side turned in spirited play despite the contest being only an exhibition game.
The first few minutes of play saw the Tar Heels offense execute at a high-level, as UNC clicked for three scores by the 10:00 minute mark. Three separate Heels hit twine in the span, as Nicki Barnes, Beth Ames and Stephanie Scurachio all fired scoring strikes.
ut, as the half played on, and the Tribe got the kinks worked out, W&M's defense rallied behind the strong net work of freshman keeper Kit Turnbaugh, who ended her first collegiate action by recording 12 saves. Freshman midfielder Morgan Lang got theTribe on the board in the game's 20th minute by converting a free position shot. The two teams entered the half with the score at 3-1.
The Tribe carried the action in the second half, as the squad outscored Carolina, who enters the year as the 10th-ranked team in the nation, 5-3. Senior team captain Allison Evans scored a pair of goals over the final 30 minutes, including the game equalizer with just 12 seconds remaining.
Allison Higgins had two goals and an assist for UNC in the game.
Carolina will play its first game of the 2003 regular season on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m against Davidon at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
