
Carolina Rolls Past Campbell On Senior Night

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team dominated the Campbell University Fighting Camels 39-3 in Carmichael Auditorium tonight. Seniors Christopher DiGuiseppe (Holland, Pa.) and Jimmy O'Connor (Woodbine, Md.) picked up victories in their final regular-season matches at UNC. Head Coach Bill Lam ends his tenure at UNC with a regular season record of 378-131-4. Carolina improves to 11-5, while Campbell falls to 4-9.
"This was a good tune-up heading into the ACC Tournament," said head coach Bill Lam. "All my emotion was with the NC State match, so this wasn't as big a deal, but I thought the guys wrestled well tonight."
No. 18 Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) opened the meet with a fall over Andy Bricker 1:41 into the match. This gave the Tar Heels a 6-0 start against the Fighting Camels. The pin gave Rodrigues a total of 14 pins this season, which leads the nation in the 125 pound weight class.
No. 17 Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) won his 13th straight match with a technical fall over Luke Francis at 4:03, raising the Tar Heel lead to 11-0. Campbell's Adam Bricker put the Fighting Camels on the scoreboard with a decision over senior John Paul Igoe (Long Island, NY), making the score 11-3.
Freshman Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) utilized two take downs en route to a major decision over Campbell's Elliot Berger, widening the Tar Heel lead to 15-3. DiGuiseppe picked up Carolina's fourth win of the night with a decision over Campbell's Vic Arena making the match score 18-3.
At 165 pounds, O'Connor wrapped up his final regular-season match with a fall at 4:17, extending the Tar Heel lead to 21 points, 24-3. Sophomore Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) narrowly defeated CU's John Carlisle in a 3-2 decision, increasing the Tar Heel lead to 27-3.
Carolina's Dusty Heist (Meadville, Pa.) won his 14th match of the season with an 8-3 decision over the Fighting Camels' Brian Hocum as the Heels led 30-3. Freshman David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.) picked up the third pinfall of the night for UNC in 2:26 over John Ottinger.
In the final match of the night, junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.) picked up the Tar Heels' seventh straight win of the meet with a 4-2 decision, as Carolina routed CU 39-3.
North Carolina will travel to Boone, N.C. for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Saturday, March 8. The finals for the tournament will begin at 7 p.m.
