MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - St. John's defeated North Carolina (5-2) 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach. The Tar Heels left 13 runners on base and a last inning comeback attempt fell short in their second loss of the season.
The Tar Heels struck in their first at bat by putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Chad Prosser led off the game with an infield single and would come around to score on a fielder's choice by Sammy Hewitt. Jeremy Cleveland, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier, scored Carolina's second run on an RBI groundout by Chris Iannetta.
St. John's got to Carolina starter Daniel Moore in the bottom of the third inning. The Red Storm's first four batters singled. An RBI groundout by Drew Jackson plated St. John's second run of the inning and tied the score at two. Moore settled down and retired the next two batters to end the inning and the scoring threat.
Carolina regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Iannetta reached on a leadoff walk then went to third on an errant pick off throw by St. John's pitcher Greg Holmes. He scored on a Greg Mangum groundout on the next pitch, putting UNC up 3-2.
The Red Storm went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Moore walked four batters and gave up two run-scoring singles in the inning and was forced from the game trailing 5-4.
The Heels came back with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Mike Daniel walked to lead off the inning and Cleveland followed with a sharp single to left. With one out, Hewitt, last week's ACC Player of the Week, drove in Daniel with a single to right center and tied the score at five.
St. John's went ahead 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the seventh and reliever Tom Klemm shut the door on Carolina by striking out six batters in 2.2 innings pitched.
