ACC champion wrestler Dustin Heist and freshman forward Rashad McCants are
co-winners of the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week Award for
March 3-9, 2003.
Heist helped guide the Tar Heels to their 15th Atlantic Coast Conference Championship this past weekend by winning both his semifinal and final matches. Heist was seeded third at the tournament and defeated second-seeded Tom Cass (Duke) 7-1 to advance to his first ACC title match. In the finals, Heist upset No. 17 and top seeded Jake Stork (Maryland) 10-4 to hand Stork his first defeat in 25-plus matches and give the Meadville, Pa., native his first ACC championship at 184 pounds. Heist ended the season with a record of 16-9 and will participate at the NCAA Championship March 20-22, in Kansas City, Mo.
McCants scored 26 points in Carolina's 82-79 win over ninth-ranked Duke. He hit 12 of 16 field goals, had five rebounds and three steals, and hit the go-ahead three-point basket with 1:14 on the clock to break a 72-all tie. McCants was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
Other nominee:
Senior men's tennis player Trystan Meniane won in both singles and doubles as the No. 13 Tar Heels defeated Charlotte 6-1 Sunday. Meniane teamed with Greg Archer for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then downed Charlotte's No. 1 player, Arturo Aguirre, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to clinch the win for the Tar Heels.
