Tar Heels Get Off to Slow Start at the Lady Gamecock Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C.-The University of North Carolina women's golf team finished the first round of the Lady Gamecock Classic on Friday in last place of the 15-team field. The Tar Heels scored a total 34-over-par 322, 26 strokes behind first place Wake Forest.
This is UNC's first event of the spring season. Junior Ashley Prange is tied for 21st place in the individual race after carding a four-over-par 76. Wake Forest finished the first 18 holes with an eight-over 296. Duke, ranked number one in the country according to the Golfweek Ratings, holds second place with a 12-over 300.
Duke's Leigh Anne Hardin is tied for first place in the individual race with Alena Sharp of New Mexico State and Kacy Thompson of South Carolina. All three finished their first round at an even par 72.
Other Tar Heel finishes include: junior Meaghan Francella tied for 30th at 6-over 78; senior Meghan Adams tied for 65th at 11-over 83; freshman Beth Marushak tied for 70th at 13-over 85; and senior Abby Spector in 76th place at 15-over 87. Junior Stacy Hilton also played as an unattached individual and is in 80th place after carding a 20-over 92.
The second and third rounds will begin on Saturday and Sunday with an 8 a.m. tee time. The 54-hole tournament is being played at The University Club, home to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The course is a 5,996-yard par 72.
