NEWS AND NOTES
Jeremy Cleveland entered the weekend series versus Florida State as one of the top hitters in the ACC with a remarkable .448 batting average. Unfortunately for Cleveland and the Tar Heels, he managed just one single and struck out five times in 13 at-bats during the three game series causing his average to fall to .400. Cleveland had struck out just nine times all season in his first 87 at-bats before the weekend. He still leads Carolina in batting average (.400), and runs (32) and is tied for the team lead in doubles (8), RBIs (28) and total bases (63).
UNC went into Tallahassee with the ACC's top offense, batting .345 as a team but hit just .245 against Florida State's top rated pitching staff. The Seminoles' pitchers walked just five batters all weekend while striking out 32 Tar Heels over three games.
Carolina's 8-4 victory over Florida State on Saturday ended the Seminoles' 30 game winning streak at home in ACC games. The win was the first of Coach Mike Fox's career in Tallahassee and was also the first victory for the Tar Heels at Dick Howser Stadium since the 1995 season.
TOP PERFORMERS
Shortstop Chad Prosser batted .478 (11-for-23) in five games last week and was flawless in the field. Prosser doubled five times, scored six times and recorded six RBIs while extending his hitting streak to 12 games, tying the longest streak of his career.
Freshman Adam Kalkhof continued to be impressive on the mound this season, but suffered his first career loss in Carolina's 2-1 loss to Florida State on Sunday. Kalkhof gave the Tar Heels 6.1 strong innings and gave up just one earned run while striking out five Seminole batters. The left-hander is tied for the team lead in wins (4) and leads Carolina with 36 strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched.
