CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina will officially retire its first ever jersey numbers in the sport of men's lacrosse Saturday during halftime of the Tar Heels' game with No. 11 Notre Dame at Fetzer Field. The jersey numbers are those of three National Players of the Year at North Carolina--Tom Sears, Tom Haus and Dennis Goldstein. All three former Tar Heel greats will be present for the ceremony. In addition, all three will also be recognized at halftime of North Carolina's men's basketball game with Duke on Sunday.
Sears, a standout goalkeeper from Baltimore, Md., wore No. 27. Amongst his myriad of honors as a Tar Heel was his designation as winner of the Enners Trophy as the National Player of the Year in 1982 when UNC won its second of its four national championships. The Enners Trophy is given annually to the National Player of the Year as voted on by the USILA coaches.
Haus, younger brother of UNC head coach John Haus, was a three-time National Defenseman of the Year at Carolina. He won the Enners Award during UNC's national championship season of 1986. Haus wore No. 13.
Goldstein (No. 10) earned his national player of the year accolades in 1991 when UNC went 16-0 and won its fourth national title. That season Goldstein set the UNC school record for goals in a season with 47.
No. 12 North Carolina hosts No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. UNC faculty, staff and students get in free with their UNC One Cards.
