Courtney Bumpers Selected As EAGL Rookie Of Year

DURHAM, N.H.--After an outstanding debut season, Courtney Bumpers became the first North Carolina gymnast to be named the 2003 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Rookie of the Year. Bumpers was not the only Tar Heel to have a successful season, however, as three teammates joined her as selections to All-EAGL teams in every event.
umpers started out strong, winning the all-around competition in her first four collegiate meets. In only the fourth meet of her collegiate career, Bumpers broke the school's all-around record by scoring a 39.600 and tied the school's floor exercise record with a perfect 10.0, a feat only three other gymnasts in the North Carolina program have ever accomplished. The freshman was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week for two consecutive weeks during the season. She tied the school vault record of 9.95 twice and is currently ranked fourth in the league in vault. Bumpers is also ranked sixth in the EAGL in all-around competition.
umpers was the ony Tar Heel to be named unanimously to two All-EAGL first teams - vault and all-around. Junior Anna Wilson received a unanimous selection to the All-EAGL floor exercise first team for the second straight year.
umpers was also named to the first team for balance beam. Wilson was tapped for the first team in the all-around and the second team for balance beam.
Second team selections went to sophomore Olivia Trusty in every event in which she regularly competes - vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Freshman Mikel Hester was named to the vault second team.
The Tar Heels finished an impressive regular season with a 22-4 record. After placing third at the eighth annual EAGL Championship Meet, the team qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet. Carolina will head to Athens, Ga. on Sat., April 12, to compete in this meet.
