Head Coach Derek Galvin accepted the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Southeast Region Co-Coach of the Year title for the second time ever. Galvin shared the honor with Rhonda Faehn, the University of Florida head coach, at the 2003 NCAA Southeast Region Gymnastics Championships' annual banquet Friday.
Fellow coaches chose Galvin as the NCAA regional Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Last year, the UNC coach of 21 years was tapped as both the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Coach of the Year as well as the regional coach of the year.
Galvin coached the 2003 Tar Heels (22-4) to a record number of wins after remaining undefeated with a record of 12-0 until Feb. 28. Carolina's winning percentage of .846 is the highest in the school's history of competing in the NCAA.
This is the eighth Carolina team that Galvin has led to the NCAA regional meet in his 22 years of coaching. He has also taken a total of 16 individuals to the meet in the years that the entire team did not compete.
Galvin was also named a semifinalist for the 2004 National Student-Athlete Day Giant Steps Award in March.
The Tar Heels will compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet at 7 p.m. Saturday at Stegeman Coliseum at the University of Georgia. The top two teams in the meet will advance to the NCAA Championships April 24-26 in Lincoln, Neb.
