Carolina swept Maryland for the second times in as many seasons last weekend and improved their conference record to 7-5. The Tar Heels opened their 2002 ACC season by sweeping the Terrapins in Chapel Hill on the way to a 17-7 finish in the ACC. Head Coach Mike Fox is now 12-4 all-time against Maryland.
Carolina's bullpen got some much needed rest this weekend in College Park. Starting pitchers Daniel Moore, Adam Kalkhof, and Garry Bakker pitched 24.2 of the 27 innings against Maryland. Moore pitched his first complete game of the season in game one on Saturday. Kalkhof pitched seven strong innings in game two, and Bakker came within one out of a complete game in Sunday's finale. Each pitcher has now thrown 48 innings and has an ERA under 4.00 on the season while combining for a 16-3 record.
The Tar Heels' offense continues to be impressive this season as Carolina averages nine runs per game. UNC is batting .329 as a team and has outscored its opponents 333-178 in 37 games. Jeremy Cleveland leads the team in most offensive categories, including batting average (.418), runs (46), home runs (11), and RBIs (44).
TOP PERFORMERS
Sammy Hewitt batted .550 (11-for-20) last week with three home runs and 12 RBIs. Hewitt also stole two bases and had a slugging percentage of 1.050. The junior is Carolina's leading hitter in conference games where he is batting .395 (15-for-38) with three home runs and ten RBIs.
Garry Bakker went 2-0 last week and had a 1.32 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched. Bakker gave up just two runs all week while striking out nine and holding opponents to just a .176 batting average against him. Bakker was one out away from a complete game shutout before leaving Sunday's 4-0 victory over Maryland.
