GREENVILLE, N.C.- North Carolina (28-11) defeated East Carolina (24-13-1), 8-4 on Wednesday evening in Greenville. Carolina freshman pitcher Matt Danford threw five scoreless innings in which he scattered just three hits to pick up his second career victory. Chris Iannetta led the way for Carolina offensively, going 2-for-4 including a home run and four RBIs.
The Tar Heels got a home run from Chad Prosser in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Carolina took an 8-0 in the top of the seventh inning before the Pirates could even scratch a run across. Jeremy Cleveland continued his stellar season by going 3-for-4 including his team-leading 12th home run of the year.
Carolina returns to action at home this weekend when the Tar Heels host the Duke Blue Devils who are still looking for their first win in ACC play. Game one on Friday will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will be at 2 p.m. and Sunday's finale is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
