CHAPEL HILL-- Defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina will defend its title this weekend in Charlottesville, Va., at the 2003 ACC Tournament. No. 4 seed Carolina will face No. 1 seed Maryland on Friday at 1 p.m. at Klockner Stadium on the campus of the University of Virginia.
The winner of Friday's first semifinal will play the winner of the Duke-Virginia game in the championship game on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Tar Heels won their first-ever ACC championship last year in Durham, N.C.
Carolina enters the 2003 ACC Tournament with a record of 5-7. The Tar Heels, who have three regular-season games remaining after this weekend's ACC Tournament, must have a record of .500 or better at the end of the regular season to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for a seventh consecutive season.
After this weekend's action, UNC will play Massachusetts (next Thursday in Chapel Hill), Johns Hopkins (April 27 in Baltimore) and Dartmouth (May 2 in Chapel Hill).
The Terrapins lead the all-time series with the Tar Heels, 7-5, but Carolina beat Maryland twice last year and have beaten the Terps three times in the last six meetings. Earlier this season in College Park, Md., the Terrapins defeated the Tar Heels, 10-8.
Last year, the sixth-ranked Tar Heels beat top-ranked Maryland, 13-11, in the regular season in Chapel Hill. UNC followed that win up with an 11-10 victory over Maryland in the 2002 ACC Tournament championship game.
Carolina is 2-2 against Maryland in ACC Tournament play, with UNC wins coming in 1998 and 2002 and losses in 1999 and 2000.
