Tar Heels Sign 13 for 2003 Season

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina men's soccer program has signed 13 student-athletes to join the Tar Heel program for the 2003 season, head coach Elmar Bolowich announced on Wednesday. Ten of the 13 signees are North Carolina natives, and nine already have played together as members of the CASL Elite club team, based in Cary, N.C.
The class includes three members of the United States Under-17 National Team (Corey Ashe, Michael Harrington and Jamie Watson), all of whom are expected to contribute quickly at UNC as attacking midfielders or forwards.
Harrington, Lee Superville, Bryan O'Neal, David Boole, Justin Hughes, Casey Shandley, Michael Fortier, Ted Darby and Ted Odgers all play for CASL Elite, a prestigious club team coached by former UNC assistant coach Jay Howell.
"This is a good group, and I'm thrilled that we were able to get such a talented group of players from North Carolina," Bolowich said on Wednesday. "We're very excited to sign three members of the U.S. Under-17 National Team, although they will miss some games early in the season due to National Team obligations. Several of these freshmen could be starting for us in the fall because we have a lot of holes to fill."
The top three scorers (Ryan Kneipper, Matt Crawford and David Testo) from the 2002 Tar Heel squad all have graduated, as did fifth-leading scorer Mike Gell. In addition, rising senior defenders Logan Pause and David Stokes elected to turn pro early, signing with Major League Soccer's Project-40 this past winter.
The Tar Heels have made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history. Carolina went 14-7-1 in 2002 and won the 2001 NCAA championship with a school-record 21 wins.
