LINCOLN, Neb -- Representing North Carolina in the NCAA Gymnastics Championship for the first time since 1986, freshman Courtney Bumpers placed 15th in the all-around of the second preliminary session Thursday in Lincoln, Neb. Junior Anna Wilson followed in 20th place.
umpers tied a career-high 9.900 on the balance beam to tie for second place out of both sessions. As one of the top four in her session, the 2003 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Rookie of the Year will advance to the finals of the 2003 nationals to compete on the balance beam on Saturday.
umpers was the only individual competitor to qualify for finals on Saturday. She is also the first Carolina gymnast to ever make it to the finals of a national meet.
"The people who are in the finals on beam - it's like the who's who of college gymnastics," said Head Coach Derek Galvin.
Galvin was also very proud of Wilson's performance. "She is a remarkable person to compete at nationals after recovering from her injury," he said.
oth Bumpers and Wilson injured ankles late in the season. Wilson was unable to compete in the conference championship meet as a result of her injury. They both battled back, however, and qualified for nationals as the first Tar Heels to do so in 17 years.
umpers will compete in the final round of the individual event competition on the balance beam at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the University of Nebraska.
